MAIN Post 5: Macro/Micro analysis of an opening sequence from your genre.

It started with a relatively simple page with the text 500 days of summer written in a white text, all in capitals. An animation of a building appeared in a way that it looked like it was being drawn on the background behind the next. A tree is then added which quickly then grows leaves. Finally all the detail including some of the text (apart from 500) fades out, the word 500 slides down to 488 like a lot machine which I think is a good effect added to the opening scene. A bench fades in the same style as the building and tree did and quickly fades to a real life image of a boy and girl sitting on a bench. This shot is framed in a medium camera shot with a lot of natural light. This shot then sharp cuts to a square with a moving eye inside, a name appears next to it (Joseph Gordan-Levitt). This then fades to the same kind of effect, just inverted; a square with a different moving eye inside, this time a girls name (Zooey Deschanel) appears next to it. It then goes back to the sketch from the beginning shot and the date then roll back from (282) to (34). We are then shown a split screen, the left side is a medium shot of the young boy from behind sitting on a train and the right side is a close up of the young girl, the production managers name appears. Both clips have a lot of use of natural lighting. It then returns to the first sketch that was used at the beginning again, 35 rolls up to 303 and the lighting fades. It then cuts to a split screen of the two boys and girl. The girl’s box then fades out completely, the directors name (Marc Webb) appears, still in the white block capitals. It then returns again to the sketch scene at the beginning of the clip but this time the lighting different, the sun is visible and there is a lot of sun rays beaming down, there is also blossom on the tree. The date count has now gone down to 1. This then fades to a blackout and the title sequence finishes.
The music that is being used suits the video well as it is calm and peaceful just like you would associate with spring. When you see the young boy and girl as well as seeing the couple on the bench earlier on in the video, it makes you think that there is chemistry between them whether they are related or they are a couple, this gives you an idea as to what the rest of the film will be about if you do not know already. After researching the market that this type of film falls under (romance/rom-com) I found that other films of the same genre have similar animated introductions such as Enchanted. This film is a mixture of cartoon animation and film life filming. There are not many special effects in this opening scene but from researching other films, special effects are very common, especially in the film Enchanted, quite a lot of them are based from drawing
